Gym class heros!!
Gym class has been very intense this year. Hockey so far has been my favorite! We got new sticks, and they don't work as good as the last ones. I am afraid of the fast moving ball sometimes but other times I get very competitive. For some reason when I have the ball and am trying to score, I pant like a dog. Other times I ramble off Spanish. I don't really know why I do this or what I even say at the time, but I've heard from a lot of people that it is very entertaining. Camilia told me one day in gym class that Senor Meyer y Senor Moneck were laughing at me. :( At first I was embarrassed but then they told me how funny it was and they weren't making fun of me. They were just pointing out my good Spanish speaking skills! It made me proud.
Mrs. Temple y mi
I have Mrs. Temple for both Comp 1 and How College Works/Career Decision Making at Kirkwood. I think she is a very good teacher and a lot of fun! This year she has helped me help myself become more organized and find out more about myself. I love the fact how she is always telling students they can do something when they doubt it. One day in Comp class we were working on our comp papers and listening to music. Rosalina was in charge of the music that day. We listened to Besame and other spanish songs. I know Mrs. Temple was happy that we chose this song because she used to be a Spanish teacher. She understood a lot of the song and thought it had a good beat. I like the song a lot too. We all thought it was funny that we listened to a Spanish song in an English class.
Sometimes at Kirkwood when we hand papers in Mrs. Temple also says gracias and we all say back de nada. I like including random Spanish into my days.

A la nanita nana
In choir, we are singing a spanish song by the name of "A La Nanita Nana." When we first got it I felt rather cool because I am the only one in spanish 4 in choir and I know almost all of what it is saying without the help of the translation on the back. It says something a long the lines the child Jesus sleeps. It is Christmas Eve, blessed be. Of the star in the sky the angels sing. come kings, shepherds to the gate of Bethelem. Come to adore him Child in the crib. There are some parts in the song when we have to sing many words very fast. Most everyone stumble and stop singing because they don't exactly know how to say the words since they are just starting spanish. For once in my life, when we first sang this song, it was almost like reading English. Well, not exactly, but it was fluent! After about three weeks the other people are finally starting to figure out how to sing it. I just feel like I am ahead of the game for once :)
April Ludgate/Aubrey Plaza!

April is part Puerto Rican because the actress who plays her -- Aubrey Plaza-- is also of Puerto Rican descent. Aubrey is a comedian famous for deadpanning everything. She's from Delaware and practiced improv in different groups before landing on "Parks and Recreation." She's also been in a few movies, such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Funny People.

Ricardo Montalban

Early in my life I realized I was a SciFi kid. I loved anything that involved space and the supernatural and most days in my youth I spent watching the SciFi channel on TV. Back in the day most shows were low budget and a bit cheesy, but my dad and I enjoyed watching it none the less. One of the greater shows that appeared on SciFi was the all so famous Star Trek.
In the movie, Star Trek, Captain Kirk travels the Universe fighting theives and villians in the famous ship, Enterprise. Throughout the series many villians attacked the Enterprise and many were vanquished. One of my all time favorite villians was Khan, played by Ricardo Montalban.
Many of you may know Ricardo as the grandpa on Spy Kids, but I'm more accostumed to Ricardo in Star Trek. The move Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan puts Ricardo against William Shatner head on in an all so glorious battle, that remains to this day as one of the greatest battles in all of movie history. Ricardo may have been portrayed as a villian in his movie, but in my eyes he will always be a hero.

One of my mom's all time favorite shows is "Frasier". She watches it all the time so of course, I watch it too. One of the characters on the show is named Andy Garcia. He was born in Cuba and he was conjoined to his twin. Through surgery, the doctors separated the twins and now he has a scar on his shoulder. When Garcia was 5, his family left CUba becaust Fidel Castro took over and began a Communist government. They ended up in Miami Florida (home of my favorite NFL football team, the Miami Dolphins) and nothing came easy. They had to start their lives over from scratch but they made it work. He took acting classes at the Florida International University and got his major in theater. His first big role was on the show "Hill Street Blues". In 1990, his career really took off. He kept getting more and more roles and he was becoming very successful.
Feliz Navidad

In Spanish on Monday we watched a video about how they celebrate Christmas in Mexico! I can not believe how long they celebrate Christmas there!! On December 16 they start something called "los posados." This is when the people spend nine days straight having parties on streets and going door to door reinacting Jesus's arrival. They ask the people at each door if they can stay the night. They also sing traditional songs at each house they stop at. They spend time having children reinact Jesus's birth, or building the nativity. Children portray an angel, Virgin Mary, and the three kings. Of course, they smash pinatas and eat lots of food throughout the celebration! The traditional pinata is a star with seven points, the 7 points represent the 7 deadly sins. Sugar canes, peanuts, and candy are some popular types of food found in the pinatas. On our Christmas day, December 25, it is seen as a day of rest for the Mexicans. They just sit at home and "chill," as the girl in the video described it. Poinsettias are considered the Christmas flowers. The girl in the movie told a story about a poor boy who had nothing to give to Jesus when he was born, so he pulled weeds and flowers appeared at the ends of them, or poinsettias. December 28 to them is compared to April Fool's Day to us! The Mexicans believe that the Three Kings didn't arrive until January 6, and that is the real Christmas day to them! I would love to celebrate Christmas as long as they do! It's my favorite holiday!! In a way, I'm kind of glad I didn't go to Mexico this summer, becasue now I'm going to go during Navidad!! :)
Javier Bardem

I am an avid watcher of movies. One night while watching a few movies a certain actor tended to stick out to me. Javier Bardem starred in the movie No Country for Old Men. Javier Bardem was born on the Canary Islands which can be associated with Spain. In the movie I watched, he portrayed an assassin in the movie. I decided to look up the actor and found out that Javier has a Spanish background. While researching I also noticed that Javier is married to a famous Spanish actress, Penelope Cruz. Javier Bardem stands up several gay rights and religious rights which makes me respect the actor even more. I've never really noticed Javier Bardem until I watched that movie but I am going to watch more of his movies and I will then think about his Spanish background.
YouTube- Olivia

Yesterday I was working on homework and my radio wasn't working, I cannot do homework without music. So I went on YouTube and I googled the song Wanted by Hunter Hayes. I looked next to the video on the right where it said "related videos." I saw this random M&M commercial on the side so I clicked on it. It was hallarious and it was in SPANISH!!! I felt kinda smart because I listened to the commercial and didn't even relize that it was Spanish until the end but I understood it through the whole thing. :) Cara feliz!
My new music playlist!
Music video Friday has pretty much changed my life. This weekly event has not only created additional excitement for Spanish IV, but it has also added music to my playlist.
"Tu eres mi canción" can be found on a cd in my car, along with several other Spanish songs. Lucia Gil, at 13 years old, is pretty much my hero. Whenever this catchy song is shuffled on my iPod, I get excited! It's a pick me up song with its upbeat tempo and cue Spain-ish accent. No song can replace the love I have for "Besame" by Camila. On the way home from a college visit, Chica, Teo, Jessica, and I were jamming out to the random songs I have on my cds. "Besame" came on and Chica y yo became super excited! I cranked the cd player and began to belt out the lyrics. Teo asked me, "Do you really know all the words?" I modestly told him that I didn't, but as the song continued, he knew I lied to him. It's just so awesome!!
Among my other favorites are "Quiero" by Anahi, "Aqui Estoy Yo" and "Gritar." I love "Gritar" mostly because I love Mr. Fonsi! Spanish music is special when you actually understand what is being said. ME GUSTA VIERNES DE MUSICA VIDEOS!

Texting

One day while waiting in line for lunch, Angie asked to see my phone. So I gave it to her because I knew she wouldn't do anything bad. I had no idea what she was doing until she gave me my phone back. When I went to use my phone it was in Spanish! This was a new phone to me at the time, so I had a heack of a time trying to turn it back to English. I finally gave up and decided to keep it in Spanish for awhile. When I got a text message it was normal, but then when I tried to respond to the text, my phone typed in Spanish! It was kind of frustration, but eventually I got over it. Then I tried again to turn my phone back to English. It was a treat and it was frustrating, but at the same time it was fun. I also tried to do it to her phone, but on her phone it remembers what you did last, so it was no fun.

Voy a Maquoketa Valley.

Personalmente, me gustaría uniformes.

No me gusta parecer otras.
Me gusta llevar jeans y camisetas.
Using Spanish at Work!
So one day I was working at the good 'ol Payless Foods in Dyersville. It seemed like just another normal day at work. People come in and buy their grocerys and I check them out. Well that day was totally different. A lot of Mexican families come in and get all their basic foods at Payless. When they come in some of them speak spanish while others do not. Well it was around eight o'clock at night when a group of construction workers came in. Some spoke Dutch, German, and two of them spoke Spanish. The two that spoke spanish came through my line. While I was checking out the lady in front of them, i over heard them talking in Spanish. I looked up and saw they were staring at me, and giggling. I went back to my work. They began to talk again, so I paid attention even more. As it turns out they were talking about how tired I looked to them. I found it quite amusing, because I actually understood what they were saying! I looked up that them and smiled. They gave me they look that was like "Oh my goodness could she actually understand what were are saying" kind of look. I was proud that I understood what they were saying, because if I didnt know any spanish I would have automatically thought they were talking bad about me! it was a gooooooood day!
Me gusta mi ropa mucho. Me gusta expresar toda sobre mi. Ropa deber apropiado para escuela. No distaer la clase en la habitacion. Pero unos escuels tienen traje codigo. Fui de Beckman por tres anos. Me gusta codigo pero, no expresar mi mismo mucho. Me gusta Maquoketa Valley escuela mucho!!
Talking to the workers :)

Quincy works at a farm where they have Native Mexicans working for them. I have gone to the farm to help Quincy a couple times. When I was up there the one time I heard one of them talking about me to the other and got interested. I started listening and heard them say things like "how did he get her" and "she makes those boots look good." This disturbed me just a little and made me feel a little uncomfortable. I listened for a little longer until one of them noticed I was there listening. As soon as they knew I was there they stopped talking. They stood there and starred in amazement when I said "Muchas gracias por las felicitaciones." They were speechless and I just laughed and walked away. Little did I know Quincy and his boss were listening and thought it was funny that I knew what they were saying about me.
I was very proud that day. I was happy that I could use my Spanish. I was also very happy for the compliments!

Me gusta mi ropas. No llevamos ropas inadecuado. Llevamos ropas simpáticos. ¡Me gusta Maquoketa Valley!

Me gusta ropas muchos. Me encanta ir comprando. Yo no habría comprar muchos ropas. Guardaría mas dinero por otra cosas.
