Over the summer I got the chance to go to Mexico! While were in Mexico one of our first trips was to Chichen Itza. Chichen Itza is one of the greatest Mayan ruins of the Yucatan Peninsula(said in Elliot's accent). It's located 75 miles east of Merida, which is the capital of the state of the Yucatan, Mexico.
Chichen Itza was founded by the Putun Maya around 850 A.D. It is over 1500 years old. The name Chichen Itza is a Mayan word: CHI(mouth) CHEN(well) and ITZA(of the Itza tribe). The main attraction is the central pryamid. Which is known as El Castillo. El Castillo is one of the most popular and most recognized tourist sites of Mexcio.
It is now one of the seven wonders of the world. It has 365 steps(one for each day of the year). At sunset during the spring ans autumn seasons a triangle shadow is formed making it look like a huge snake is coming out of the huge pyramid.
I really wish we had gotton to see this while we were there. They even have a snake head to show were the snake would be during that process. Also at Chichen Itza there are alot of little shops throughout the ruin site. They sell many things like home made bowls, dresses, key chains, and much more.
While we were there I was very suprised that the people selling their goods made their children come and try to sell the goods for them. I think they only did this because it makes people want to buy something because the child selling it to them is cute and you don't want to deny them. I also suggust to bring an umbrella because it rains alot. Other than getting rained in I really enjoyed our trip to Chichen Itza!
